Corruption rooted out in Georgia2009-12-10 15:13
How strange it is: the president states there is no corruption in Georgia while the Ministry of Justice is discussing anticorruption strategy today. No corruption - but every week somebody is caught red-handed taking bribe and the opposition accuses the government of grabbing this lucrative business.
Today in Georgia the final draft of National Anticorruption Strategy is on discussion uniting representatives of the Justice, Interior and Finance Ministries, Supreme Court, Control Chamber, the National Bank, various NGOs and journalists.
It is strange to see such a lively interest in corruption in Sakartvelo when the president repeatedly declared victory over it. Advertising his country before investors and financial donors on every tribune Mikheil Saakashvili emphasizes he put an end to abuse by the officials and police.
This thesis, albeit a disputable one, was picked up by the whole world amazed at the way the US protégé tamed the officials that got out of hand practically anywhere in post-Soviet space. They say Saakashvili has managed that.
Recently in order to strengthen his image he announces that Georgia had become a №1 corruption fighter in the world adding that the progress is much higher than Corruption Perception Index by International Transparency foundation shows.
"International transparency" experts assigned 4.1 points to Georgia ranking it 66th among 180 countries of the world. Last year the corruption level was even higher and the number of points - lower (3.9).
But Saakashvili is not satisfied with a "good" mark. He is used to being "excellent" at fighting corruption. "This is not Saakashvili 's PR, as some hot-headed and hot-brained persons think;" - the president is quoted on Civil.ge. - This is reality. According to the European Bank's survey we are one of the three most uncorrupted states. This makes us believe that no matter what enemies we have and what political ambitions there are inside and outside the country Georgia is developing".
Mikheil Nikolayevich made this statement at an award ceremony for contribution to road construction awarding several persons for that. By the way late in October Mshen-07 construction company CEO Georgy Didebashvili was "beheaded" for corruption. He was accused of misappropriation of GEL 700,000 thousand out of GEL 4,000,000 set aside from the state budget.
Just for a note: laying hands on budgetary funds he was not an official still.
