Is a new war real, a war for Akhalgori?2009-12-15 16:47
According to the Russian media, Tbilisi is getting ready to conquer the Leningorskiy (Akhalgorskiy) region of South Ossetia. Such scenario is hardly possible; still, it cannot be ignored. The more so, as the government is currently developing a new strategy in respect of the lost territories.
The sources of the Vedomosti Russian business newspaper in MFA and Ministry of Defense consider the threat of another war with Georgia to be real. This time, it may be the war for Leningorskiy (or, according to the Georgian toponymy, Akhalgorskiy) region, which is populated by the Georgians for 70% and which had been controlled by Tbilisi before the last year war.
According to the interlocutor of the periodical, the Georgian troops around the region are enforced and intensively rotated. Simultaneously, foreign instructors are teaching methods of running a war in the mountains to the Georgian servicemen.
As was reported earlier by GeorgiaTimes, according to the Russian General Staff, a special structure was established in the Georgian Ministry of Defense called "Studying the lessons of war". Its work resulted in inviting Turkish specialists who could "provide assistance in forming the Rangers battalion, which is to become the basis for creating Georgian special operations forces in mountainous regions".
Georgia is now much better armed than it had been before August 2008, Head of the Armed Forces General Staff of Russia Nikolay Makarov underlined in November. Besides, several days ago, the Georgian government announced that the military power of the country has been restored.
While opening a new dislocation of the first artillery brigade in Vaziani, Mikhail Saakashvili underlined that he was sending the soldiers to Afghanistan to obtain the necessary military experience.
Thus, there is nothing surprising in the fact that the army taught to fight in a real war, not only at the training base, will have a shot at fighting in Leningorskiy region. The more so, as many experts could not understand last year why Georgia decided to make war upon South Ossetia in summer, while winter would have been the best time to do that, for all the passages from Russia are covered with snow. Right now it is the most suitable moment in this context.
