Russian businessman to challenge Saakashvili

2009-12-18 17:36

4899.jpegAn international conference of the World Congress of Peoples of Georgia (WCPG) was held in Saint-Petersburg. Kommersant newspaper published the report on the event announcing it was the start of WCPG President Alexander Ebralidze's pre-election struggle for presidency.

Rustavi-2 camera crew and Imedi camera man were present at the conference assuring they would share the footage with Meastro and the First Channel of Georgian TV.

The purpose of this gathering was to unite isolated Georgian diasporas scattered all over the world in order to put real pressure on current processes in Georgia.

The forum established in February showed itself during Sochi conference in May. The aim of the Congress as declared in the official address is to take Georgia out of the crisis and offer a way of stable democratic growth, creation of a united, neutral, free, prosperous and democratic Georgia. A proposal on Mikheil Saakashvili's voluntary resignation from the post of Georgian president is put forward.

Maybe this is the reason why Georgian authorities adopted a strictly negative attitude to this organization. Though WCPG founder Alexander Ebralidze's presidential ambitions must be more irritating for official Tbilisi.

This well-known Russian businessman with an ambiguous past was born in Georgia. Now he calls on Mikheil Saakashvili to grant him Georgian citizenship intending to run in presidential election scheduled for 2013. For the time being he is going to contribute to restoration of Georgia's "territorial integrity". Mr. Ebralidze told journalists he was ready to accept Georgian citizenship, move to Georgia, get involved in politics, publish a newspaper, launch a radio station and TV.

It was long ago that the businessman from Saint-Petersburg informed the Georgian public about it. On May 30 2009 Rustavi-2, Georgia's pro-presidential channel presented a live interview with Alexander Ebralidze.

"It is true that I will run for president of Georgia. I'm absolutely self-confident. I have my business and lots of activities of my own. I have always been a long way off politics and have never yearned for it. We have always been on different poles. I didn't head for politics, politics burst in after the war in August 2008. I'm sure the situation is on such a point that if we, Georgians don't solve accumulated issues in the near future we risk losing territories, our nation, people". Then President of the World Congress of Peoples of Georgia Alexander Ebralidze told about his plans to create a political team and take an active part in Georgia's political life.
