Georgian children at the mercy of drug addicts2009-12-21 16:49
According to the Georgian media, General Inspection of Ministry of Defense of Georgia detained Headmaster of school No.27 Mikhail Pruidze for drug consumption. He was under the influence of narcotic drugs during the detention. The arrested person has already admitted guilt and confessed that he had been consuming drugs for two years.
The fact that a drug addict has been heading an educational institution holding responsibility for the children is an egregious case. Still, this seems to be not the only case in today's Georgia, for even the head of the state is accused of drug taking by the people being among his closest associates.
In his recent interview to Georgian periodical Alaval-dasavali, former State Minister of Georgia and the current oppositionist Georgi Khaindrava stated as follows: «I may bindingly confirm that Saakashvili is a drug addict. To prove my assertion, I propose undergoing a drug test together with him in laboratory conditions».
The small Caucasian country is breaking the world records on hard drug consumption, primarily heroin, per one thousand of citizens. Georgia is also the planet leader as to the drug addicts' number growth rate. For instance, according to the evaluation of the UN International Drugs Control Committee, during the last six years, the number of drug takers in the country has grown by 80 percent!
According to leader of the Green Party of Georgia Georgi Gachechiladze, who is referring to statistical data of the abovementioned committee of UN and the U.S. administration, 17 people out of every thousand consume heroin in Georgia. The republic is significantly in advance of Russia, which occupies the second place (11), Estonia (10), Great Britain (5), Italy (5), Ukraine (2,9), France (2,6) and Germany (1,4).
According to the experts, the general amount of heroin addicts in Georgia is 80 thousand people. Heroin belongs to the so-called hard drugs, for it irretrievably influences the human body and mind, causing almost instantaneous addiction. Heroin consumers apply for medical help more often, comprising 78 percent of drug addicts being on medical files and displaying the highest death rate.
These people also suffer from severe illnesses, such as AIDS and hepatitis C. According to Rosbalt, during the last five years, the number of HIV-infected people in Georgia has grown 4.6 times and the number of people seized with hepatitis C has grown 4,4 times. It is also underlined that the data is official, while the non-official figure might be significantly higher. Besides, according to statistics, heroin mostly kills the Georgians in their prime, that is, between 20 and 40.
