Saakashvili’s new “godfather” in Washington2009-12-24 14:58
It seems the US Senate has settled the economic crisis issue, domestic debts and dollar exposure. Now it turns to foreign policy. Senators suggest resumption of arms supply to Georgia condemning Russia for buying new weapons. Is Washington back on the old track?
US Senator Richard Lugar of the Republican Party (see photo) calls on the US government and EU countries to consider resumption of arms supply to Georgia. Suggestion was made after a number of statements made by Moscow pressing for sanctions against arms suppliers to the aggressor country. It's not an unsubstantiated accusation by the way. Heidi Tagliavini's international commission acknowledged Georgia as the aggressor.
According to Lugar first of all Georgian antimissile systems must be reinforced. As the senator says without them Tbilisi is so defenseless that it may lead to more instability in Caucasus. To continue his train of thought: with them the Georgian army's new sortie will be much more successful than last year.
After the military conflict in South Ossetia in August 2008 the USA have already donated USD 1 bn on military potential restoration. Georgians fulfilled the task flawlessly. Early in December Defense Minister Bacho Akhalaya reported the armed forces' full recovery after the defeat.
Western military aid is formally justified by Georgia's participation in Afghan mission as part of the international contingent. Besides Georgia is being slowly converted to NATO standards in view of a remote prospect of joining the military alliance.
Not long ago Russian special services learned about US intention to provide Georgia with USD 100 mln arms supply. It is planned to meet the needs of anti-missile and anti-tank defense reinforcement with Patriot-3, Stinger, Thorn-3 rocket launchers and Javeline and Hellfire-2 anti-tank missile complexes.
So Lugar's statement is not new. It only revealed intentions of the US politicians.
As for this senator, as Regions.ru writes, Richard Lugar used to be called "Russia's friend" in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He made a considerable contribution to the growth of Russian-US cooperation including nuclear threat reduction. He also helped destroying Soviet weapons of mass destruction.
Later however Lugar changed his attitude to Russia ranking it equal to Iran and Venezuela that use their energy resources to put pressure on their neighbors.
