A memorial to Georgian heroes: let it be

2010-02-03 23:45

5244.jpegThis spring, in April or May, a memorial to the Georgian heroes who died during the Great Patriotic War will be erected on the Hill of Respectful Salutation in Moscow. The monument will be put instead of the Glory Memorial exploded in December 2009 in Kutaisi by the decision of the Georgian authorities.

President of the Union of Georgians in Russia Mikhail Khubutia, who is also member of the guardian council for memorial erection, has underlined that the point at issue is the creation of an absolutely new monument.

Such decision was taken on February 2 after the first business meeting on the issues of the monument construction, which was attended by representatives of the Moscow Government Cultural Committee, the United Russia party, the Union of Georgians in Russia and other organizations.

According to Khubutia, it is impossible for external reasons to reconstruct the Glory Memorial exploded in Kutaisi; thus, in order not to bury the memory of the Georgian heroes in oblivion, it was decided to erect a new monument to those who died in this sacred war. "We simply have no choice, - said Mikhail Khubutia. - We want the memory of our grandfathers to remain unshaken".

According to Khubutia, the project of the memorial will be selected on a competitive basis. The competition will be announced on February 9-10. "Everyone who wants may present his project. I would be very happy if the architects from Georgia also took part in the competition. The new monument is aimed to eternalize the memory of our glorious fellow countrymen and restore historical justice. The Union of Georgians in Russia is ready to provide assistance to the Georgian architects wishing to participate in the competition", - Khubutia underlined. The Union of Georgians in Russia will coordinate the fund raising needed for the monument construction.

Let us remind you that the Glory Memorial was exploded in Kutaisi on December 19 by the decision of the Georgian authorities. An eight-year-old girl and her mother died during the explosion. The Georgian and Russian people opposed historical vandalism. At the end of last year Prime Minister of Russia Vladimir Putin stated that the destroyed monument would be reconstructed in Moscow. "The destruction of the monument is another attempt to erase the common past, the heroic past from the memory of the people of the former Soviet Union. In this respect, I consider it possible to reconstruct the monument in Moscow, the capital of the state that once was united", - Putin stated in December at the government presidium session.
