An attempt to consolidate: win or lose

2010-02-25 22:01

5419.jpegThe spring is coming, reviving the political life in Georgia, which traditionally assumes a most unexpected character. In advance of the local elections fixed for May 30, leaders of the numerous oppositional parties quarreled with each other, so the cooperation between the once uncompromising competitors is being negotiated. The balance is changing almost every hour but all the oppositionists stress the necessity of unification. However, the main task - proposing a single candidate for the post of Mayor of the capital -can be so far characterized as an illusive dream.

The customary and quite peaceful political situation in Georgia (after the spring protest actions) has been stirred by Irakli Alasania. One of these days, there appeared the information that he is going to leave the Alliance for Georgia he is heading (the Alliance includes the Republicans, the New Rights and another party established by Alasania, New Georgians - Free Democrats). This political union is practically the only lucky attempt of the opposition to join its ranks.

It was Irakli Alasania who was named by the oppositionists as a candidate for the post of mayor of the capital on behalf of Alliance for Georgia (which post, according to the opinion of many people in Georgia, leads directly to the post of president).

Other oppositional parties named their candidates as well. The only obstacle that prevented them from agreeing upon a single candidate was the oppositionists' "permanent inability to agree"; each of them is insisting upon his own strategy and his personal idea of fighting the authorities.

It turned out to be an unreal task to coordinate the actions concerning a single candidate when one part of the opposition is going to boycott the elections, while another part protests against the cooperation with leader of Movement for Fair Georgia Zurab Nogaideli and his friendship with United Russia and the third group insists upon its candidates.

The experts agreed that the actions of the opposition play into the hands of the authorities. Considering the disagreement, the current city administrator Gigi Ugulava is surely going to win. Today's mayor is one of Saakashvili's most devoted supporters.

According to the opinion polls, a couple of weeks ago, 65% of Tbilisians were ready to vote for him.

Many experts are convinced that it is only Irakli Alasania who is able to defeat Ugulava.
