Why does Tbilisi need Europe’s firm hand?

2010-03-03 17:16

5475.jpegThis week, the officials of Tbilisi are actively communicating with their European colleagues. Political consultations between the foreign administrations of Georgia and Poland have just been completed when the chairman of the Latvian Seym arrived to Georgia. Today, the country is going to be visited by the EU delegation. What are the reasons for the activity of Saakashvili's regime at the foreign policy front?

As was reported earlier by GeorgiaTimes, Georgia held political consultations with Poland at the beginning of the week. The discussions were held in Tbilisi; they were attended by the representatives of the foreign administrations of both the countries. As was expected, the Polish delegation confirmed its support of Georgia in the issues of sovereignty and territorial integrity once again. The parties also discussed the issues of bi-lateral relationship and multilateral cooperation on the way of being integrated into the European and Euro-Atlantic structures.

Having seen the Polish delegation off, the Georgian officials are welcoming Chairman of the Latvian Seym Gundaras Daudze who is coming to Georgia with a three-day visit. The guest is intended to meet with President Mikhail Saakashvili, Prime Minister Nikolay Gilauri, State Minister for Reintegration Temur Yakobashvili, and the representatives of the parliamentary opposition.

Today, the European Union delegation is coming to Georgia headed by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, the EU presiding country, Miguel Angel Moratinos who is also intended to meet with Mikhail Saakashvili and Temur Yakobashvili. Moreover, Moratinos is going to visit the opened border checkpoints of Kazbegi and Verkhniy Lars.

Naturally, one is interested to learn about the reasons of the activity of the country authorities at the foreign policy front, especially that the president was reported to start off for Turkey, having promised to come back in ten days.

Firstly, it is possible that the Georgian leader is seriously reckoning upon the negotiations with Moratinos. The point is that last week, the EU Special Representative in the Caucasus Piter Semnebi told about starting negotiations with Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan on the associated membership of the three republics within the European Union. "For Tbilisi, Yerevan and Baku, the signing of an agreement like that is going to become the means of setting up the free trade and the people's movement", - the diplomat underlined.
