Spies banned from Georgian presidency2010-03-10 08:53
A legislative novelty will soon be introduced in Georgia. Persons with double citizenship might soon be banned from public positions. Earlier the president did his best to make acquisition of Georgian "allegiance" as democratic as possible however spy scare outdid his liberalism imposing limitations on "semi-foreigners".
Georgian FM Grigol Vashadze's timing to renounce Russian citizenship was right. His compatriots are now preparing a new law prohibiting persons with double citizenship from holding top political jobs.
The State Constitution Committee intends to initiate a relevant draft law at the autumn parliamentary session.
"Now there are no limitations for persons that have Georgian and other citizenships to occupy public positions. If this part of the draft law is adopted public positions will be granted only to Georgian citizens while citizens registered in other states won't get them", - Tengiz Sharaneshvili, secretary of the State Constitution Committee said, GHN reports.
It looks like the idea emerged after the visit of Russian rights defender, ex Soviet dissident Valeria Novodvodskaya to Georgia. Among various advice she gave brotherly Georgians she called to beware of double citizenship with Russia.
"Until Russia is neutralized all former Soviet republics must abolish double citizenship. Now that Russia and Georgia are not in good-neighborly relations, to put it mildly, I simply don't understand how Georgia can bring up the issue of double citizenship in Georgia and Russia. In my view, citizens who live both in Russia and Georgia and want double citizenship must make a choice", - she said.
Novodvorskaya herself holds this "dangerous" double citizenship. Long ago, in 1992 she was granted Georgian citizenship by Georgia's first president Zviad Gamsakhurdia. However, Valeria Ilinichna is not going to move to Georgia enlightened with Western values like Oleg Panfilov, her colleague did, refusing to accept Russian citizenship ideologically though domiciled in Moscow.
Alexander Ebralidze, a Russian citizen who has been seeking Georgian citizenship from Mikheil Saakashvili, the only person exclusively authorized to grant it, is believed a truly dangerous figure in Tbilisi.
He controls the World Congress of Georgian people from his Saint Petersburg office and is a successful businessman. However, this is not the reason why he is notorious in his sunny motherland. Last spring Ebralidze presented himself as a presidential candidate in Georgia. He was not confused at the lack of Georgian citizenship or 10 years' permanent residence.
