Circassians approaching from the Georgian flank2010-03-23 20:59
Why do the Chechen militants always seek shelter in Georgia when they need to heal their wounds? Why is it in Tbilisi that the Caucasian People Confederation adopted an appeal for the recognition of the independence of Ingushetia and Chechnya? Why do some of the representatives of the Adygeis and Circassians with the participation of the American foundations in Georgia raise the issue of the genocide committed by Russia two centuries ago? The answer is clear: the country that has been defeated by the Russian Army is ready to provide shelter to anyone who is at least morally ready to take revenge upon Moscow.
One of these days, the Georgian parliament received a request to recognize the genocide of the Circassian people in the XIX century. The Russian Empire was then conquering the Black Sea coast, severely suppressing the local population. According to the Russian commanders, they had to do away with one half of the citizens to subdue the other half.
At that time, such things did not look as cruel as they would look now. The USA made imperial wars and bit off a smart piece of Mexico. England and France launched "opium" wars in China and completed the process of colonization of the African countries. Hundreds of thousands of people died; they were not covered by the humane laws that were passed later.
Now the foreign friends of the Russian Adygeis and Circassians demand an answer for the cruelty of the XIX century empire from the Russian Federation, which is not even the legal successor of the Russian Empire, for in due time, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic denied the legal succession from the monarchy. Besides, the very notion of the genocide was introduced only after the Second World War. Before that, the world was ruled by the sword-law and, according to this law, Russia extended its borders from Poland to Sakhalin and from Karelia to the Caucasus.
It is no coincidence that the Adygeis decided to start with Georgia. This country is ready to provide shelter to anyone who is not satisfied with Moscow's policy. The supporters of the North-Caucasian separatism often hide there, and the country has found space to hold a conference called "Hidden nations, lasting crimes: the Circassians and the people of the North Caucasus between the past and future".
