Abkhaz-Kosovo parallels drawing apart2010-03-31 00:15
No one would argue that the precedent in Kosovo made the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia possible. However, Russia, which supports Serbia's integrity, does not welcome reducing the situation in the Balkans and in the Caucasus to the same denomination, as well as the USA, which is much concerned about Georgia's integrity, are opposed to a comparison like that. As American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has stated on the Russian TV air,, "we can see a great difference", while Foreign Ministry of Abkhazia characterized such position as the "double standards policy".
The United States of America are using the double standards policy, ignore historic facts and justify Georgia's policy of aggression. That is the way Foreign Ministry of Abkhazia commented upon the statements made by the USA Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the air of the First Channel TV program, Apsnypress reports.
Answering a question about the Kosovo precedent, Clinton stated that "since the very beginning of Yugoslavia's decay, Kosovo was striving after independence; the people thought that the region had been made part of Yugoslavia by force". Besides, according to her, there was certain "tension in Serbia that resulted in the ethnic cleansing against the people Kosovo".
Thus, the Secretary of State gave reasons in favor of Kosovo's right of independence, while Georgia "was a united country and there had been no such conflicts there".
According to the Abkhaz Foreign Ministry, these statements speak of the fact that the USA ignore historical facts and justify Georgia's policy of aggression.
The administration reminds the ignorant American activist that "within a thousand years, the Abkhazians had their own national identity and have never been part of Georgia". In this aspect, the difference between Kosovo and Abkhazia speaks in Sukhum's favour.
As to the argument that the Albanians demanded independence "since the very beginning of Yugoslavia's decay", Abkhazia had proclaimed independence before the USSR was established and joined the Union as Georgia's equal. "Even after the forced elimination of the independence status and bringing it down to the level of autonomy, Abkhazia had the right to determine its future on its own according to the Soviet law "On the order of settling the issues concerning a republic's withdrawal from the USSR", - MFA's commentary says.
