Russians Recreate What Was Destroyed by Saakashvili2010-04-20 12:25
More than three thousand and a half of Russian citizens have already made their donations for the restoration of the Memorial of Glory blown up in Kutaisi. The reconstruction of the memorial will start already in 2010, and on 6 May, on the St. George's Day, the first foundation stone will be laid.
The press service of the "Historical Heritage" fund told us that a new monument named «Struggling Together Against Fascism» will be erected in Moscow on the Poklonnaya Gora Hill. «We have called upon everyone who is indifferent to the destiny of monuments dedicated to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War», runs the official communication. And, despite the monument will be built only on voluntary charitable donations, mainly from the Georgian diaspora in Russia, over 3 500 Russian citizens and over 50 organizations have sent their contributions to the special account of the fund.
The Memorial of Glory in Kutaisi was blown up on 19 December at the decision of the Georgian authorities. The memorial explosion killed an 8-year girl and her mother. The Georgian and Russian community have come out against historical vandalism. At the end of last year the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin declared that the destroyed monument would be restored in Moscow.
«The monument destruction is another attempt to cancel the memory of our common past, including heroic deeds, from the memory of the peoples of the ex USSR. In this connection I think it possible to recreate this monument in the capital of the former union of republics: in Moscow», said Putin in December during a meeting of the Presidium of the Government. In the Premier's words, the recreation of the exploded "Memorial of Glory" in the Russian capital may become «ground for resuming a civil dialog between Russia and Georgia».
An open tender for the design of the "Struggling Together Against Fascism" monument started on 5 April and will last till 25 May. Anyone can participate in the tender, including not only Russians and Georgians but citizens of other countries.
The first stone will be laid in the foundation of the Poklonnaya Gora memorial will be laid on 6 May, on the Day of St. George, patron of Georgia and the city of Moscow. According to the President of the Union of Georgians in Russia Mikhail Khubutia, some veterans from Russia, Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia will be invited to the ceremony of laying the first foundation stone.
