Orthodoxy and peacemaking: a way for Caucasian youth2010-04-22 13:08
On April 20, a meeting was held between Chairman of the Church External Relations Department of Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan of Volokolamsk Ilarion and the Orthodox young people of the Caucasus upon the initiative of the "Union of Georgians in Russia" all-Russia public organization.
This meeting is one of the most important joint projects of Moscow Patriarchate and the Union of Georgians in Russia. For instance, the youth wing of the organization has been formed with the blessing of the two patriarchs, His Holiness Cyril Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and Catholicos Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church Ilia the Second.
"Orthodoxy is the strongest thread that has been connecting our nations for many centuries against all odds. These uneasy days, the young people need support and care, wise instructions and good advice most of all. That is why, the Union of Georgians in Russia cooperates with the Church so closely and treats the instructions of the church officers so carefully. We would like to thank Master Illarion with all our heart for finding time to talk to us and give wise instructions to our youth", - President of the Union of Georgians in Russia Mikhail Khubutia welcomed those who gathered in the hall.
More than 300 people of various nationalities gathered in the conference hall of the St. Danilov monastery. That was a unique event, indeed: the Russians, Georgians, Abkhazians and Ossetians were sitting next to each other. It was clear on that day that the August events did not split the nations and did not tear the deep spiritual connection between them.
It should also be noted that the meeting was attended by the Adygeis, the Kurds and the Pontic Greeks living or temporarily staying in Russia. Besides, the representatives of the Armenian expatriate community and Muslim youth of several Caucasian regions were also invited to the meeting as guests.
If the politicians and political analysts had been present there they could have witnessed a model of the peaceful Caucasus that the countries are trying to build with so much effort.
Even the diplomats would envy the meeting: the most urgent issues were discussed in an utterly delicate and sincere manner.
The young got a unique opportunity to put their questions to Master Ilarion.
