No Breakthrough in Zugdidi2010-04-22 17:46
The Gal Region inhabitants tested the strictness of Russian border guards. The attempt to cross the state border with the Zugdidi Region of Georgia was suppressed. 40 passengers on two buses were detained. Tbilisi called it capture, and the fines imposed on the trespassers robbery.
The Georgian inhabitants of Abkhazia still do not believe that they live in a new independent country. People who used to visit their relatives in Zugdidi without any problems for dozens of years cannot realize why they cannot cross the border any longer where they wish. They are not happy with the presence of just one check point on the Inguri Bridge the access to which must be paid.
The detention of the two buses two nights ago is just the latest case of a series of similar incidents. The Russian military men put off the bus 40 passengers, including some women with children.
The Georgian mass media said that the border guards took them hostages or prisoners. In addition, they robbed them and took away the transport means. All night long the people were kept in the forest, in the open air, and only at 7 o'clock AM they were transferred to the Russian base. They are supposed to be released only after paying the fines.
In the alternative Abkhazian government created in Tbilisi this was qualified as violation of human rights in an «occupied Georgian» region.
At the same time the Georgian officials perfectly understand the true reasons of the event. A representative of the pro-Georgian administration in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Tornike Kilanava explained to Medianews that the passengers were detained because of illegal trespassing, as they had no passes. «To receive a «pass» you need to pay a certain sum of money, and people don't have them, so they can't receive any passes and try to cross the border without them», said Kilanava.
Another thing is that the official Tbilisi does not recognize any borders, passes and Abkhazian leaders who created the pass system. So all the events happening in the Gal Region are explained by the «lack of democracy» and «criminality» of the «puppet government and occupants». And to make it look still gloomier such vocabulary items as «prisoner» and «robbery» are used.
