Abkhazia fences itself off from Georgia2008-11-06 09:37
In the morning of November 1 in Khurcha village in Zugdidsky district a bridge connecting the region with Galsky district of Abkhazia was blown up. News agencies of Georgia with reference to the eye-witnesses informed that the bridge had been exploded by Russian militaries that blockade all crossings across the Ingury river between Abkhazia and Georgia.
According to the information from the Georgian police some days ago three bridges on the Inguri were blown up. The version of Tbilisi is that they have been destroyed in order not to admit EU Mission observers to Abkhazia. There has been no reaction from the Russian militaries yet. Abkhazian leaders came into play instead. The Head of Galsky district militia unit of Abkhazia Lawrence Kogonya disproved the messages that the bridge had been exploded.
"Georgian party are disseminating provocative statements trying to discredit Russian militaries who do not blow up bridges in Galsky district, - the head of militia stated. - At 4.00 am an explosive device of unknown construction was actuated though the bridge was not ruined as a result of the explosion".
Kogonya also stated that on Friday night in Taglan village close to Georgia-Abkhazia border a cart and a Belarus tractor were exploded on mines laid by persons unknown. There are no casualties as a result of the explosion.
"Many territories adjacent to the border are mined by Georgian sabotage groups. This time luckily there were no victims, - the Head of local militia stated. - More than once did we warn the residents of the district against crossing the border between Abkhazia and Georgia in undue places bypassing the checkpoints. The border with Georgia will be closed until the situation is settled down though some desperate persons violate the crossing mode".
It will be remembered that on October 26 in connection with the aggravation of the situation in the district President of Abkhazia Sergey Bagapsh held an extraordinary meeting of the Security Council of Abkhazia where he accused Georgia of full-scale terrorist activity and an attempt at transfer of Galsky district of the republic. On October 27 a special unit for struggle against the raiders was composed with the Head of Joint Staff of Abkhazia Anatoly Zaytsev in charge of it.
