Extermination of Georgian base

2010-05-20 09:49

6028.jpegAdoption of Anglo-Saxon culture has turned into a mania. Georgian FM promised to "exterminate" the Russian name for the country replacing it by the word Georgia, like in English. A similar request was submitted to Japan that wants to avoid confusion with the US state. Now Grigol Vashadze appeals to Lithiania with the same request.

The story about panic-stricken Americans hearing news on invasion of Russian troops to Georgia is now a byword. They simply could not understand how these Russians had managed to bypass US frontier posts.

However, the mishap was not embarrassing to Georgian leaders. On the contrary, it was even flattering that US citizens are so worried about Georgia.

The effect was taken into account and after the war in 2008 Georgia started liquidating Russian pronunciation of the country's name. The decision was to adopt an English word better known due to popular songs, not Sakartvelo, the self-designation.

Recently Georgian FM Grigol Vashadze, now on a visit to Lithuania, told journalist that he had not abandoned the idea realizing though that the word "Georgia" would arouse certain ambiguity, DELFI reports.

"I will destroy term "Gruzia", I promise. And not only in Lithuania", - was a passionate vow of the man who gave up Russian citizenship not long ago, and who had gone to university and had got married in Moscow.

As early as in 2009 Vashadze submitted this request to Lithuanian authorities getting NO as a reply. Lithuanian FM minister Audronyus Azhbalis explained that linguists did not recommend that the name of this Caucasian country be changed. "I'm very cautious in language matters always trying to follow advice of our prominent linguists", - he said.

Georgy Kerdikoshvili, Georgia's ambassador to Lithuania once complained that a Russian word adopted from the Turkish language was used to denominate his country while Georgians would like their country to be named in compliance with Greek tradition.

But Kerdikoshvili couldn't be unaware that the Russian variant is used in other languages too: Vashadze continued anti-Gruzia crusade in Japan which can in no way be referred to post-Soviet states.
