Who’s going to Geneva?

2008-11-13 14:19

In such a way the European delegation had to learn by experience that the Caucasus is a delicate matter. Bagapsh pointed out that he had agreed to take part in another round of dialogue with Georgia only "because of his respect to such world leaders as Medvedev and Sarkozy". Tbilisi where the European delegation went after the meeting in Tsukhum stands its ground. The State Minister for reintegration Temur Yakobashvili determined the place of the inappeasable republics like this: "Representatives of Tskhinval and Sukhum can never be equal negotiators. Only as part of the Russian delegation. Then they refuse to go to Geneva?... Well, it is their right. We will not agree to the actions that in any way may imply the sovereignty of our autonomies. The format of negotiations is defined by three most reputable international organizations that have their own principles. They recognize Georgia's territorial integrity and won't make any concessions in favor of Russia in this matter", - he stated. According to Yakobashvili if the

negotiations are frustrated the EU will blame Russia for it.

However some time earlier Georgis'a Ministry for Foreign Affairs stated that Tbilisi was ready to take a constructive part in the Geneva meeting.

Despite of Mr. Yakobashvili's emotional statement there is an opinion that the country leaders have mitigated their uncompromising position. According to European politologists it is due to the EU pressure on Tbilisi for the sake of compromise.

A Georgian politologist, Ramaz Klimiashvili, told our reporter about certain concessions that had been mentioned: "Georgia has changed its position. If initially we demanded that Abkhazian and South Ossetian delegation did not take part in the negotiations now the open issue is this - who and in what status will take part in them". According to the politologist it is also unclear who will represent the Georgian delegation personally. At the first round in Geneva there was the head of the alternative government of South Ossetia Dmitry Sanakoev and the representative of the Abkhazian government in Georgia. In fact that was the cause of the conflict situation with the delegations of Abkhazia and South Ossetia that have their own governments.
