Chance for victory

2010-05-28 21:45

6084.jpegToday Georgia stops pre-election campaign activities. Summing up the campaign, experts point to weakness of oppositional self-promotion, successful social accents made by the dominant party and the power of administrative resource. Most public opinion polls show an evident result of the parties' unequal status in this seemingly democratic country.

It is impossible to conquer Mikheil Saakashvili's team that controls all major mass media, as stated by Irakli Okruashvili, Georgia's ex defense minister aired on pro-opposition Maestro TV from France.

Last year he was waited for as a messiah. Radical forces relied on his influence, his connections and the charisma to remove the president from Georgia's political domain. But Okruashvili, wanted on suspicion of corruption , and who had been accusing his ex patron of deliberate preparation for the war in South Ossetia and, had never turned up.

This year the ex minister's For United Georgia movement first signed in the Central Election Committee to run in election but then they gave up this plan. "Today's environment does not provide equal conditions and consequently it is simply impossible to achieve anything here", - the ex minister stated referring to major mass media controlled by the authorities, the machine of repression, and legislation.

The Labor Party, National Forum, Movement for United Georgia, Imedi party skip the election for the same reason. They are not indifferent observers though actively criticizing current authorities. Recently the Labor party has called not to vote for Gigi Ugulava, Tbilisi's current mayor and a United National Movement candidate since he is Saakashvili's criminal twin". "He is guilty of budget misappropriation, he is responsible for dispersions of peaceful rallies". - the party explains.

Earlier the Labor Party called on other political forces to boycott the election. But Zurab Nogaideli's National Council for instance thought they had no right to leave the voters without an alternative. However, non-parliamentary opposition has poor chances to win.

"Authorities win elections successfully everywhere and their opposition rivals who run in elections for various motives, with different strategies and different purposes will see their struggle was absolutely in vain", - Okruashvili forecasts.

The political emigrant thinks Gigi Ugulava will score 100% of votes in Tbilisi. He will also be the next president allowing current Interior Minister Merabishvili and deputy FM Georgy Bokeria to preserve their posts.
