EU observers come under fire2008-11-18 18:37
On November 16 the EU representatives were attacked by fire on the border with Abkhazia. As it is specified in the EU mission statement they have no reasons to believe that the firing was directed exclusively on the observers but the actions like these are absolutely inacceptable.
The Europeans got into a really queer mess. As the observers say they were examining circumstances of the armed conflict as a result of which a Georgian policeman was murdered. Sukhum has another opinion: it is believed that the EU observers crossed the border together with the Georgian police.
According to the news from Abkhazia on Saturday around Saberio village the Abkhazian border guards got into action with a group of Georgian raiders. "There was gunplay. According to unspecified information, there is a casualty on the Georgian side", - the head of district department of the interior Lawrence Kogonia stated. As usual Georgia disproved the statement. The information from Tbilisi is this: Abkhazian armed gangs brought fire on the Georgian funeral procession. As a result of the attack at the catafalque a Georgian police officer was killed, other three persons were wounded. It is not specified in Georgia why there were so much police during the procession. It looks like the Ministry of the Interior was defending the procession from the dead man.
The complaints of the EU representatives aroused an unexpected reaction in Abkhazia. According to the president of the republic's authorized representative in Galsky district Ruslan Kishmaria the incident with the policemen took place in this territory. And if the EU observers were under fire that means they entered the territory of Abkhazia illegally.
"The events in Galsky district show that the EU observers take part in the military provocations organized by Georgia, - Kishmaria stated. - Last Saturday they entered Abkhazia in company with the Georgian armed unit. What right did they have for actions like that? Naturally our units pushed the Georgian militaries back out. Apparently the EU observers that were taking part in the provocation got under fire at this very moment. We believe that such actions do not contribute to settling down the situation in the conflict area and force Georgia to new irresponsible steps".
