Struggle for unity2010-06-12 23:04
Results of recently held local election in Georgia have pushed the republic's opposition to get united. No wonder - since the overwhelming victory of now ruling National Movement candidates almost in all districts is considered as falsification and frame-up by the opposition. Nino Burdzhanadze's call to get united is taken up by Zurab Nogaideli, leader of Movement for Fair Georgia and Irakli Okruashvili, founder of For Free Georgia movement.
The meeting of two ex state officials - former PM and former defense minister of Georgia - was held in Paris with Nogaideli and Okruashvili discussing the political situation in the country and inter-party cooperation. As a result they made a joint statement over the election results and the situation in the country. According to former colleagues of Georgia's current leader the 30 May election has once again confirmed that Saakashvili and his regime are struggling for their dominance cynically taking advantage of all resources in Georgia. The document also refers to the opposition's disunity unable to offer serious resistance to the current regime and confusing people.
Nogaideli and Okruashvili believe there is no time to abide and wait since the government's unwise actions have already paralyzed economy, have led to growing unemployment and emigration, as well as increase in foreign debt - all that heralding an economic catastrophe. "Each day of alienation from Abkhazians and Ossetians makes prospects of the country's reunification more distant", - the oppositionists are sure. - Only united we can stop destruction of Georgia and start recovery. This is the only way to overthrow Saakashvili's authoritarian and corrupted regime and reach democracy and supremacy of law".
Well, there have been several calls to get united from the opposition since local election results were announced. Nino Burdzhanadze, Democratic Movement - United Georgia leader, was one of the first here stating that on May 30 Georgian government completed formalization of the election result they had planned since the electoral process was a farce - not a mechanism to solve problems in the republic.
The ex speaker suggested that the opposition front begin joint activities aimed at early parliamentary and presidential election. "For us it is most important to get united around those principles and establish a plan that would help us achieve the goal", - he added.
