Reformers celebrated the anniversary, Tbilisians – Giorgoba2008-11-25 15:31
Georgia has celebrated the 5th anniversary of the Rose Revolution (the incident on the border with South Ossetia took place in the evening). The weather was marvelous: it was warm and sunny. However most Tbilisians went to the country to see their relatives for another reason: to celebrate Saint George's day with their friends and families according to the good old tradition (this feast coincides with the state holiday).
Meanwhile the authorities made up a couple of PR-actions in line with the new tradition. In Shardena Street where every day people gather to show off and see others the students organized a concert "We are building a home". The proceeds are planned to be channeled for creation of living environment for the refugees. Young musicians were trying to "cheer up" a few guests on the same ground. "The holiday must be in the heart and everything looks too sad", - I heard from some friends of mine whom I phoned to give St George's greetings.
It is the second year that the holiday (the birth of the revolution) is overclouded by the complex political situation in the country. Last November for nine days Georgia lived in a state of emergency imposed by Mikhail Saakashvili after the oppositional meeting breakdown. Now the situation has grown even more complicated: three months after the August events the authorities find it still more difficult to convince their fellow citizens of the war triumph.
For instance right before the holiday in his address to the people Saakashvili admitted that "for these years the country leaders have not managed to meet all expectations of the people". There is a justification to this according to Mikhail Nikolaevich. "Expectations are always more than possibilities", - he convinced repeating as a mantra: "The main achievement is that for these years Georgia has become an independent state". And more: now Georgia has two enemies - "poverty and Russia". And in conclusion he appealed to solidarity. It is unclear whether in the struggle against Russia or poverty: "the Russian aggression has deteriorated and complicated the perspectives of restoration of our territorial integrity greatly damaging our economy. Now we as never before have to be cautious, patient, united and keep our faith in the future", - "Kavkazsky uzel" is quoting Saakashvili.
