The second war? Georgia’s Interior Minister doubts it2008-11-28 14:17
Following the scandalous exposures of Georgia's ex ambassador to Russia Erosy Kitsmarishvili the parliamentary committee for investigation of the August events summoned the head of the Interior Ministry Vano Merabishvili. He accused Russia of preparation to the August aggression presenting photos and printouts of telephone talks and relieved Mikheil Saakashvili from responsibility for the failure in the military operation.
The photos presented by the minister show considerate enforcement of the Russian bases in the territory of South Ossetia that went on for a year before August. According to the minister this testifies the systematic war preparations. The telephone talks feature ex leader of Adzharia Aslan Abashidze and Russian general Borisov. And though they were recorded in the heat of the war (discussion over Gori capture) Borisov insisted that Russia intended to liberate Georgia from "Saakashvili regime" according to this document.
As for the defeat of Georgia as the head policeman stated it was he who took the individual decision to leave the Kodori gorge that eventually predetermined such a result.
Alongside with this the famous hawk quite unexpectedly stated that "a large-scale operation in Tskhinval district is unlikely on the part of Russia".
"Though there are Russian bases and certain armed forces they are not enough to carry out a large-scale operation", - V. Merabishvili asserted remarking that in terms of Russian policy minor provocations are not excluded.
It is noteworthy that lately the word "war" has been floating in the Tbilisian air as persistently as in August. The people in the capital repeat still more often: "They say Russia is going to attack us again and reach Tbilisi", "We are getting ready to the war, do we need that?" etc.
The war experts only add fuel to the fire. Koba Liklikadze and Pavel Felghenhauer on the part of Russia. Recently Koba Liklikadze has stated he does not exclude a new military operation in the territory of Georgia. "It is unlikely that Russia is strengthening its fortifications and building new ones in the Georgian territory just to go away or protect Sukhum and Tskhinval. This is preparation of the firm base for another aggression aimed at the power overthrow in Georgia" - "Kavkaz press" is quoting the expert.
