Ksenia Sobchak tests Tbilisi with a T-shirt

2010-08-23 12:55

6717.jpegRussian TV host Ksenia Sobchak known for her provocative behavior has made an indelible impression on the conservative and reactionary part of Georgian society strolling about Tbilisi in a T-shirt featuring Vladimir Putin. The Russian showbiz star was almost accused of a new armed clash between two states. Still, right-minded people did not turn the fact into a political issue thinking of Sobchak's performance in the only right way - as of a joke.

Sobchak came to Tbilisi as a host of a large corporate party in honor of one Georgian tycoons. Sobchak decided to add a bit of spice to an ordinary routine when "TV faces" do cities and town of the post-Soviet space. She arrived in the capital of Georgia wearing a T-shirt by Denis Simachev, a celebrated Russian designer, featuring Russian PM. One should not be a Solomon to guess what kind of feedback Sobchak was seeking.

At the time of the Russian TV host's visit to Tbilisi it was rumored that President Mikheil Saakashvili has a liking for Ms. Sobchak. Her visit could have been used by the current Georgian authorities as a propaganda pretext but even if it was part of the plan, Ksenia Anatolyevna torpedoed it with ease and elegance. Tbilisi's ruling elite should have realized that the small and frail woman would have taken advantage of Georgia's current image like facing a bull with a red cloth. Though the bull did not rush ahead but just sniffed and hovered about, the signal was more than clear. Now thanks to Sobchak's act, Russia will discuss Georgia as a kind of amusement to rattle nerves and get an extra portion of adrenaline - nothing more.

However, there was no scandal over all that. The celebrity long used to hearing her behavior condemned and learning to extract benefits from it, was acting in a matter-of-fact manner having fear of nobody or nothing. She has a number of influential acquaintances in Georgia. Even her father, Anatoly Sobchak, is highly respected in the country. He became honorary citizen of Georgia and its capital with a bust of Saint Petersburg's former mayor standing in Tbilisi. In 2004 a street in his name appeared in the capital. All that is the sign of gratitude for the contribution Sobchak made to activities of ad-hoc parliamentary fact-finding committee in follow-up to the tragic events of April 9, 1989 in Tbilisi. Ksenia Sobchak has not any similar service to the people of Georgia so far, and hardly will there be any, but she had an absolutely different purpose of her visit to Georgia - to earn some money and have fun.
