Russia-Abkhazia sea traffic: a nausea syndrome for Tbilisi

2010-08-23 17:37

6725.jpegGeorgian Foreign Ministry decided to express protest after the manner of political prisoners and street vendors: it accused Russia of violating the international law in connection with direct sea traffic opened between Sochi and Gagra. However, such step might have been well expected, for the tourist flow to Abkhazia scarcely managed by land frontiers, as well as the active development of the republic's connection with Russia, have deprived Tbilisi of sleep.

Opening regular sea traffic between Russian and Abkhaz ports was first mentioned by Russia in the first days of this month; however, Georgia did not attach much significance to it. At the same time, the Georgians immediately sounded the alarm as soon as the first passenger vessel arrived from Krasnodarsky region last Tuesday.

In Tbilisi's opinion, by resuming sea traffic with the "occupied" Abkhazia, Russia has proved that "it does not reckon with the generally accepted standards and international law principles".

Still, it's a big question who is showing less respect in this case: the Georgian government that triggered off the bloody August 2008 war or Russia which is developing relationship with the new sovereign states.

However, it is no secret that Saakashvili's regime suffers from an obsessive inclination for protesting and going to law against Moscow as opportunity offers. Georgian government is also proud of having filed two interstate lawsuits against Russia with European Human Rights Court. There is not much to boast of, however, for there is small point in overburdening the instance showered with private complaints (by the way, Georgia is the world leader in the number of complaints per capita) with interstate claims and then wait three years for them to be considered. Georgia's third complaint is getting dusty since September 2008 at the UN International Court: strange as it may seem, Georgia accused Russia of violating the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination. Well, does it bear any connection with the fact that Saakashvili himself divides the white people into "normal" and "negroes" on an unknown basis?

Tbilisi took pains to send requests to various international instances asking them to take measures and make Russia "completely fulfill the assumed international obligations and perform immediate and full de-occupation of Abkhazia and Tskhinvalsky region". There has been no response so far and there is little possibility that any of the countries or international organizations will be seriously concerned about the call of Tbilisi government.
