Little hospitality for Americans at the Black Sea2008-12-03 13:45
US President George Bush ordered to have all American commercial vessels going beyond the Bosphorus insured against possible war risks. The White House admits it is connected with the events in Georgia where the USA commercial fleet supplies everything - from humanitarian aid to military equipment.
According to the order published on the White House site the president instructed the transport minister to insure the vessels out of a special state fund.
"This commission was issued by George Bush as early as in September following the notorious events in Georgia, - National Security Council spokesman Benjamin Chang stated. - War risk insurance is granted to the commercial vessels by the government in case insurance companies do not furnish it. We are not making a secret out of the fact that we support Georgia's government and are going to promote expansion of commercial ties between Georgia and the USA".
Activation of sea trade with Georgia was preceded by the US and NATO military fleet cruise. In early August-September about 10 ships were maneuvering in the Black Sea zone. Supposedly for the exercise. NATO representatives denied any relation of this operation to the crisis between Russia and Georgia. But then however Americans grew even more active in the Black Sea.
The US general policy in the Black Sea was formulated in 1997 by the analytical group "The Project for the New American Century". Here are some extracts:
"The Black Sea was a black hole in the history of Europe. Now this region is of central strategic interest to Europe and the United States. Today, the member states of the European Union import approximately 50% of their energy needs; by 2020 imports will rise to 70% of consumption. This increase will be delivered to Europe across and around the Black Sea region. In this connection the US must take over the control of the area".
Here is an example of "taking over the control". For some time past the shores of Georgia have been guarded by the American missile cruiser "Barry". From time to time it puts into Poti or Batumi. This is how the Yankees got familiar with the barter trade in Soviet style. The friendly visits ashore invariably end with the crew gathering tangerines.
"The US naval forces are a constraining factor for Russia, - Georgia's state minister for reintegration Temur Yakobashvili stated. According to him "resumption of its aggression against Georgia is quite real. Russia is a violent bear that occasionally tries to raise paws. As it usually is we come under the blow".
