Georgy Danelia’s universal soul2010-08-26 11:54
On August 25, Georgy Danelia, the director of such cult movies as Striding Round Moscow, Mimino and Kin-Dza-Dza, the script-writer for the immortal Gentlemen of Luck, is celebrating his 80th anniversary. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev awarded the Master an Order of Merit for Country of the II Degree for his numerous achievements. GeorgiaTimes team heartily congratulates this wonderful man, a personality of enormous scale and a great film director, and joins the Master's colleagues, actors and friends to wish him splendid Caucasian health.
A helicopter aviator who decided to become a first-class pilot, a Siberian mounter and an unfledged writer - Danelia's movies are stuffed with dreamers and creatures from outer space. Although many of his films were shot as comedies, they leave the audience pondering over the meaning of life.
Danelia's bright talent displayed itself in satire. The first film he shot in this genre, Thirty Three, was regarded by Soviet government as too daring. The film was not screened for 22 years until 1988.
His movies are filled with laughter and tears, indescribable fantasy and wordplay. His characters' remarks are still among the most quoted ones within the entire territory of the former Soviet Union.
Today, Georgy Nikolaevitch received a well-deserved reward from Russian President Dmitry Medvedev - Order of Merit for Country of the II Degree for the significant contribution to the development of domestic cinematography and long-term creative work.
However, his talent, just like any genius' talent, lies beyond the boundaries of a single country. That is why, Danelia's films repeatedly won the prizes at the international film festivals in Cannes and Karlovy Vary, and even in the far Japan the director's fans made a special website dedicated to his works.
Today, Georgy Nikolaevitch was congratulated by Speaker of the RF State Duma Boris Gryzlov and Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Cyril, as well as leader of the neighboring state Alexander Lukashenko.
The eighty-years-old Danelia is still active and full of creative plans. Presently, he is immersed in working over one of his most favourite creations, Kin-dza-dza. When this fantastic film was first screened in 1986 it was much in advance of the time. Now Danelia wants to recreate it in the form of an animated film and make it more updated. He is going to add new characters to the Kin-Dza-Dza-Dza cartoon, such as DJ Tolik. The only thing unaltered is the Patsak language invented by the director, which, according to his wife Galina Danelia, they often use in their distant communication.
