Domino without Mimino2010-09-10 17:57
Abkhazia has hosted the best domino players of the world - the head of the International Domino Federation and presidents of the two national federations of Venezuela and, what' most interesting, the USA. The guests had an on-site look at the conditions under which the World Domino Championship is to be held next year. Georgia may only kick itself: it has no membership in this sports society and will be able to neither prevent the competition, nor take part in it.
Domino players are scarcely concerned about political problems. They speak the same language - the rattling of dice - in Abkhazia, Russia and the USA. In Georgian streets, old men also like to play domino alongside with chess and backgammon. Still, for some reason, the country has not yet applied for membership in the International Domino Federation.
If the official Tbilisi had taken interest in this sports in due time, it would have made a lot of efforts to prevent Abkhazia from taking part in the competition as an independent state. And of course, it would hardly allow the 2011 World Domino Championship to be held in Sukhum.
Abkhazia was lucky to become the center of the next international tournament in this kind of sport. According to Artur Gabunia, the decision was taken this June in Las-Vegas, where the latest international competition took place. There was a choice between Venezuela and Dominican Republic. Gabunia wasn't at a loss and named Abkhazia as a compromise. His initiative was actively supported by representatives of Russia and Venezuela.
And now President of the International Domino Federation Lucas Guittard and Presidents of the domino players of US Manuel Oquendo and Venezuela Efrain Velasquez have come to Abkhazia. Today they met with President Sergey Bagapsh. He surprised them a lot by saying that domino is the second favorite game in the republic after football.
The most pleasant words for the Abkhaz were those of President of the US Domino Federation Manuel Oquendo. He assured that the political non-recognition of the republic won't prevent his national team from taking part in the world domino championship in Sukhum.
"We do not mix politics with sports; we appreciate friendship and communication", - Oquendo underlined.
