No cross over Georgia

2010-10-05 14:41

8420.jpegA crying icon is a sad miracle. It is high time that Saint Nina, illuminator of Georgia equal to the apostles who brought a miraculous cross from vine branches to the country cry with bloody tears over Georgia. Could she ever have thought that Georgia -  one of the three domains of Virgin Mary, where Andrey the First-Called preached and Apostles Simon Kananit and Matfiy are buried - will have the orthodox cross turned into a political one by some local figures? The sign of common salvation for Christian nations is derogatively named "a provocation" and "a piece of iron"...

United Russia party Saint-Petersburg branch has come across this vision after they presented a good intention of setting a cross near the memorial to the warriors that perished in the Great Patriotic War that was demolished on December 19 2009 in Kutaisi. The memorial was blown up: there was no other site for a new building of Georgian parliament in small Georgia.

Now local authorities refuse to allocate six square meters to the cross. Apparently guided by the principle "beware the Achaeans bearing gifts" Georgian media pulled their socks up to find a Russian provocation here.

What kind of Christian country should this be not to distinguish between the Trojan horse and the Orthodox cross?

As Vitaly Milonov, a deputy of Saint-Petersburg legislative assembly told in an interview with Georgia Today, the 3m cross was supposed to be erected on the lawn near the new building of Georgian parliament featuring icons of two greatest saints of Russia and Georgia - Saint Nina, equal to the apostles illuminator of Georgia, and Saint Olga equal to the apostles illuminator of Russia. Icons of new martyrs of Kutaisi and Saint-Petersburg would be displayed near the images of two greatest Christian devotees.

If celestial patrons are so close - how can secular squabbles separate them?  It is not incidental that Saint Paul wrote that Christ makes no difference between Hellenes or Israelites. Faith is what brings people together across all borders, even in a territory that seems or is considered hostile. Only evil and treason can divide Christians, and schism inside the church and among brothers in faith is the worst that can happen.
