Gilauri in pursuit of Asian hope2010-10-21 20:31
With Georgia's minister of economy and sustainable development Veronika Kobalia completely lost looking for investors, the country's PM Nikoloz Gilauri decided not to waste time and put everything into place. He is going to China as the head of the governmental delegation to discuss aspects of bilateral cooperation with Chinese PM Wen Jiabao. Does that mean that Mr. Gilauri will procure one billion dollars as promised?
"We seek diversification and try to enter Asia. Our objectives are China, India and South Korea", - Kobalia stated recently. And since a girl's wish is a law, the more it is when a girl is good-looking.
That is why China is only the first country in the scheduled tour of Asia. During the visit the Georgian delegation will visit Expo-2010 international exhibition hosting a Day of Georgia on October 29. Georgian goods produced by Fresh company (Egypt) in Kutaisi Free Industrial Zone in Western Georgia will be presented too. It is really hard to say how much the Chinese, world leaders in replicating, producing and selling technical novelties at a moderate price, will be interested in Georgian technologies.
Gilauri is not in despair understanding "by hook or by crook" is his method. First attempts to get closer to the Asian-Pacific region leader took place in 2008 when people of Ossetia learned what "Clear Field" operation meant. Rebuffed by the Russian troops Sakartvelo addressed Chinese government for help in conflict resolution knowing well why they will have to support territorial integrity of the Caucasian republic. Georgian ambassador to China Zaza Begashvili expressed hope that as a great empire China will make right conclusions.
Nobody knows what Chinese authorities really thought about the US satellite exaggerating with sovereignty and impunity in the middle of Olympics. The People's Republic of China was granted the right to host the world's major sporting event signing a special resolution rejecting persecution of rights defenders, political journalists and Taiwan freedom fighters. Nonetheless, China's public statement was a diplomatic piece of advice to stop hostilities with reference to the UN General Assembly.
In June 2010 the Georgian government made another attempt to establish relations with the PRC. The sides signed an inter-governmental agreement on allocation of a USD 3 mln grant to Tbilisi for technical re-equipment of Georgia's Income Service at the Ministry of Finance aimed at facilitation of customs control. Apparently, unexpected tax checks and "raids" against transnational companies don't give enough income to the country's treasury.
