Caucasian prisoner: exclusive interview with Garry Jopua

2010-11-16 19:00

10145.jpegToday, citizen of Abkhazia Garry Jopua was discharged from the hospital: he spent a whole month as prisoner in Georgia. He was met by several dozens of people at the hospital door. Today, this brave man is a hero. The republic has been waiting for his release for a month while Garry was held captive. Garry Jopua told GeorgiaTimes what has happened to him.

Early in the morning of October 9, Jopua went to Galsky region, as usual. There, at the Georgian border, one can buy cheap agricultural products. He fed his family buying and selling. However, he was not back to Sukhum by dinner: there came unforeseen complications. Jopua crossed the Georgian border and was taken captive.

The whole country has been waiting for any news about him for a month. Still, no one was sure until the last moment that he would be freed.

Abkhaz diplomacy raised Jopua's issue at all negotiating platforms up to Geneva process. This tactics left the Georgian security officials no chances and they had to bring the citizen of Abkhazia back home.

Tengiz Ayba was the prisoner's attending physician at the military hospital. He said that Jopua has been discharged for out-patient treatment in a satisfactory condition. "He came in a moderately grave condition. His ribs were broken and he had a closed head injury. He was in a state of stress because of what he had gone through"", - Ayba said in his interview to Georgia Times.

Jopua says he feels quite well. Bruises have healed but his feet are still aching. Within the first six days, Georgians beat him with sticks. The doctors found that his feet were badly injured: there were bone splits. In his interview to GeorgiaTimes, the injured said he was ready to come back to normal life.

Jopua is a veteran of the Georgian-Abkhaz war. He is a tough guy and managed to survive a month of constant beating. He was much luckier than another Abkhaz David Sigua who disappeared in February 2007. There has been no information on the Galsky administration officer for three years and a half. There is practically no doubt that he died in Georgian prison from the same beating as Garry Jopua had to go through.
