Corruption in Ecology Ministry continued

2010-11-19 18:35

10323.jpegGeorgia is still one of the most corruption-free states in former USSR. This time the Ministry for environmental protection and natural resources was called for purification and transparency. At the time when Tbilisi mayor cuts down sycamores unpunished, Georgi Khachidze has to take the rap for his ministry. Some of his employees have robbed their poverty-stricken state of GEL 7 mln. They face 14 years' imprisonment with Hatuna Kalmakhelidze welcoming new prisoners with open arms.

"As a result of a joint operation carried out by the constitution security department and prosecutor's office a major corruption scheme in the ecology ministry was exposed. Khvicha Pirveli, first deputy head of environmental protection inspection, Gocha Zeikrishvili, head of forest department, employees Elgudzha Kutidze, Vladimir Mindiashvili, David Urtvelidze and Lasha Kldiashvili, an alleged mastermind, have been detained, - David Sakvarelidze, deputy prosecutor general told Rustavi-2 TV.

By the way, according to the scale proposed by Hatuna Kalmakhelidze, minister for punishment execution, Ecology Ministry can be referred to an old offender. Only in 2010 employees of the ministry broke the law three times. In January eight people were detained over accusation of bribery including head of environment protection department and deputy head of first response service. In June eleven employees of the ministry were busted for illegal exploitation of natural resources.

This time the group of officials took advantage of their ranks in order to register pits for inert materials production to their relatives. A modest salary of a state official is hardly enough for bread and butter - not like 7 mln divided between 6 persons...

Anyway, members of the corruption scheme are arrested and the Georgian Ministry of Interior Affairs reports on the investigation results with a beatific smile. Though detention was done last Tuesday, the corrupt employees have already confessed their guilt giving detained explanation of the shadow plan.

This is Lasha Kldiashvili's way to turn into a monopolist: to get rid of competitors he bribed high-ranking officials of the environmental protection ministry. Then he offered artificially high bids to frustrate the auctions. After that he intimidated unfortunate participants of the tender taking part in a new bidding alone.

Besides, assisted by his accomplices, Mr. Kldiashvili was gumming up the works to entrepreneurs by organizing regular checkups forcing local businessmen to surrender their shares instead of whistling for a wind.
