The Georgian president keeps shocking the world with his revelations he is ready to share with anyone -the Russian press or at a press conference with the president of European Council. This time surprised listeners learned from Mikheil Saakashvili that Georgia is an ancient European state that had been separated from its origins by unkind fate and now desperately seeks a return. On the whole, Saakashvili makes another move toward Europe which, however, is in no hurry to open the embrace.
"Father! I have been waiting for this moment for twenty years!"- should have been Saakashvili's first phrase addressed to the European Council. This quotation from "Earl Monte Cristo" novel would be most suitable. Judge for yourselves: Europe unexpectedly learns about an appendix that was amputated long ago and now dreams of being returned to the united Western body.
"Georgia has no alternative except for Europe. Georgia is an old European country seeking its way back", - Saakashvili stated at a press conference with EC president.
Saakashvili did not specify who and when took Georgia away from the European body transplanting it into Asia. Instead he conveyed a clear message how his country suffers without maternal warmth dreaming of return to the origins.
This is quite in line with the search of new relatives launched by the Georgian president not long ago. However, until recently Saakashvili found "fathers" and "mothers" not farther than Abkhazia. Apparently, now the Georgian president wants to refine his genealogical tree with old European blood. For this purpose he set up a whole soap opera in a Mexican style with children being lost in babyhood and being found when adults.
Still, this enthusiasm had no feedback from Europe that was not particularly happy over a new member. Exactly the way Earl Monte Cristo reacted to the appearance of his self-appointed son - politely but without affection.
Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, underlines the European Union's full support for the security, stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. "We expect the entire international community to do the same", - he said ceremonially making no remark on readiness to welcome the "old new" European country. That was disappointing to Mikheil Saakashvili who hoped for family reunion right there, it seems.
