Georgian MIA stuck in the bog of imaginary provocations

2010-12-22 20:23

Georgian MIA stuck in the bog of imaginary provocationsOfficial Tbilisi's cynical attitude keeps one surprised. It turns out that MIA of the republic considers the opening at the Hill of Respectful Salutation of the copy of the Glory Memorial exploded last year in Kutaisi to be a provocative act, purporting that Moscow is trying to convince the public that Georgia does not value the people who died in the Second World War. The regime representatives' cast-iron logic was discussed by GeorgiaTimes correspondent with one of the leaders of Movement for Fair Georgia Petre Mamradze.

We were expecting another prick from the Georgian diplomats but not today. Moscow is celebrating a long-awaited event: the grand monument dedicated to the soldiers of the Great Patriotic War called "We stayed together in our fight against fascism" has been opened today in a solemn atmosphere. It turned out that the monument to the renowned Soviet warriors Mikheil Yegorov and Meliton Cantaria who planted the Victory Banner on the Reichstag building is considered by the Georgian MIA as a subject for rebukes and lectures. Being unable to understand that Moscow is correcting the mistakes of Georgia's Russophobian regime, Tbilisi keeps having it its own way.

Deputy Head of the Georgian foreign policy administration Nino Kalandadze, who is known for her restrain, has noticed: yes, Russia is a sovereign state which is free to decide upon what kind of memorials it will open. Still, the general meaning of her words does not change. One feels like asking: why are you eliminating monuments symbolizing our common history, rewriting schoolbooks and opening "Museums of Russian Occupation", at the same time accusing your neighbor of an attempt to convince the public of something? And where is the monument that was blown-up in Kutaisi, which, according to an official version, was in such a terrible need of "reconstruction" a year ago?

Fortunately, one should discern between the Georgian MIA and the Georgian people. The construction of the memorial in Moscow was sponsored by both Russians and Georgians. Moreover, today's ceremony was attended by the oppositionists who came from Tbilisi - Nino Burdjanadze and Zurab Nogaideli. We discussed the situation that has developed around the opening of the memorial at the Hill of Respectful Salutation with one of the leaders of Nogaideli's movement For Fair Georgia Petre Mamradze.

- What's your attitude to the statements of the republic's foreign policy administration about the "provocative grounds" of the monument opening?
