Gas black marketing by Sakartvelo’s government2010-12-27 20:52
According to the recently established scenario, Georgia starts a New-Year sale on the threshold of the coming holidays. Government ladies have naturally got a gigantic appetite. To provide Minister of Economy and Sustained Development of the Caucasian republic Veronika Kobalia with enough means for her pocket expenses, the state gas corporation announced another auction sale again, offering potential clients the gas that has been sold within the expiring year. What kind of containers is going to be used to measure the acquired cubic meters?
The total volume of natural gas in Georgia is estimated to be 180 billion cubic meters. The basic fields of natural resources can be found in Tbilisi outskirts: the Samgori, Ninotsminda and Shavnabada gas fields. The latter requires geologic exploration, for the natural gas development went on basically at Samgori field, from where gas was supplied to Tbilisi SDPP through the Samgori-Gardabani pipeline.
It is notable that the gas turmoil in Georgia started with discovering a gas well near Shavnabanda in 2006 sealed in the times of the Soviet Union. At that time, the happy Mikheil Saakashvili gave an order to all the structures to immediately encourage the exploration of this locality and define the volume of gas deposited in the territory. Everyone sat down to wait for a "blue" column to rise to the skies. Ultimately, the estimated supplies amounted only to 0,9 billion cubic meters, which is not much, even considering the small number of Sakartvelo population.
Presently, the produced volumes meet only one third of the country's domestic needs, amounting to approximately 3,9 billion cubic meters per year, which speaks of the scantly volume of the natural resources produced. In view of the woeful situation, the multi-billion external debt and the general sad plight of the Georgian economy, the government took a decision to develop what is available there to the maximum possible extent.
The missing volumes needed to cover the republic's own needs are bought from the Russian Federation, which supplies energy resources via the pipeline of the ArmRosgazprom joint Russian-Armenian enterprise at the price of approximately 230 dollars per one thousand cubic meters, and from Azerbaijan, which is paid 261 dollar despite the warm and almost confederative relationship.
