Russian border guards will help Abkhazia2008-12-23 13:12
In the near future Abkhazia and Russia will sign two agreements: on cooperation in military sphere and on joint control of Abkhazia's state border", - Semen Grigoryev, Russia's Ambassador stated today in Sukhum.
"These are going to be crucial agreements. I don't give dates for now as the military experts and representatives of the Defense Ministries of the two countries are at the stage of coordination. Exact dates are hard to determine but I believe this will happen within coming weeks", - Gazeta.ru reports.
According to the ambassador these documents will be at the top of the list to be signed in a short time.
Semen Grigoryev was appointed Ambassador of Russia to Abkhazia this October. Before that he was Russia's envoy to Afghanistan. He has been in Sukhum for a week already and on Tuesday he handed his credentials over to Sergey Bagapsh acknowledging his ambassadorship.
There is no Russia's embassy building in Abkhazia yet. Grigoryev is staying in the former peacekeeping HQ - the sanatorium of Moscow military district. According to the affirmations of the authorities the construction of the building for the Russian diplomats will be completed in two years' time. Its absence however does not affect a constructive dialogue between the two countries. The presentation of the credentials was a good confirmation to that. Commenting on the significance of the event Grigoryev noted:
"Russia has not been the first to recognize new states for quite a long time", - "Apsnypress" IA is quoting the Russian ambassador. - That is why now we are trying to do our best to preserve the most valuable we have had in our history including latest history of relations between Russia and Abkhazia. On the other hand we are facing a task to place these relations on a fundamentally new basis, transform them in a full-fledged intercourse between two independent countries. And first of all it requires creation of a legal environment".
Apart from the two agreements mentioned above around twenty other documents that are connected with interaction in social, economic and cultural spheres are planned for signing. Now they are under development while the military cooperation issues and specifically joint control of the Georgian-Abkhazian border are pressing as at the moment the Abkhazian army is not capable of ensuring safety in the frontier zone, and official Sukhum is relying on the Russian military contingent's assistance.
It has already been reported where exactly it will be deployed. The deployment areas were designated by Abkhazia's President Sergey Bagapsh on "First Channel" live broadcast last night.
