Knights Templars hiding behind Iliya II2011-02-25 20:27
The fame of the legendary Templars Order and its tragic end at the beginning of XIV century entailed by the avidity of French monarch Philip the Beautiful has been exciting the sensitive minds all over the world for many centuries. There are such minds in Georgia as well. They set up their own version of the spiritual knights' order but the speculations of the newly-made templars around the name of Catholicos Patriarch Iliya II who allegedly blessed them for the revival of the ancient military brotherhood caused resentment of the primate of the Georgian Church.
In the opinion of Iliya II, the very idea of a military spiritual organization is "very much alien to the Orthodox world and is unacceptable", so the Georgian patriarchy hurriedly refused to have anything with the local adherents of the crusaders' ideals.
"It should be noted that there are several regional organizations in Georgia that are not connected with the Orthodox Church. Now they are joined by Templars Order, which representatives are trying to increase their number using false information, - goes the statement of the Georgian patriarchy. - During the stay of His Holiness Iliya II in Great Britain when the Templars Order was founded, Georgian media disseminated an opinion that this organization was allegedly formed with the patriarch's blessing, which fact was proved with the help of certain photos. We declare that the Georgian Templars Order was established without the blessing of Catholicos-Patriarch. The statements that Ilya II blessed the order are disinformation and an attempt to mislead the people".
Attempts to revive the famous medieval brotherhood of crusaders were made in various countries several times. Dozens of organizations all over the world consider themselves to be heirs of Knights Templars. The main activity of the self-made Templars usually includes pseudo-esoteric studies for amateurish mystics and aggressive self-promotion for the sake of attracting new seekers of truth.
Pursuing the objectives of their own PR, modern templars are often ready to resort to rather original methods. For instance, Spanish Association of Sovereign Order of The Tomb of Lord, which members assume themselves to be true heirs of the legendary crusaders, filed a lawsuit against Patriarch of Rome Benedict XVI in 2008. The association wanted to oblige the Pope to cancel his predecessor Clement V's decision who blessed the destruction of the order at the beginning of XIV century.
