America almost out of Georgian trap2011-03-01 20:58
Russian-US reset heralded by the famous "red button" that US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's gave as a present to Russian FM Sergey Lavrov, is not going smoothly. With Russian stand on Georgian issue remaining unchanged, the United States of America have to maneuver desperately in the wilds of diplomacy with the Department of State slightly pushing official Tbilisi to peaceful settlement of problems with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Washington admits that the Caucasian republic is a major failure in US-Russian relations.
By the way, neither the States nor Russia can definitely say whether Russian FM Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton proclaimed "the reset" between two states in Geneva. Looking at Barack Obama meeting with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev exchanging gadgets and eating hamburgers together one can think the thaw is really near at hand.
Even the State Duma and Senate have arrived at a common denominator on START-3 treaty, an ancient stumbling block between Moscow and Washington. After ratification both countries shall reduce offensive weapons to demonstrate what liberal and democratically minded players they are in geopolitics. The international community is happy to have global security well-handled. However, one thing looks disturbing: aren't all these steps only a "discharge" that the States and Russia occasionally return to since 1950s? Like it or not, they are still strategic adversaries despite white-teethed smiles.
America does not forsake preparation of NATO membership plan for Georgia and Ukraine. Many presidents of America had a dream to deploy their AMD systems close to the archenemy's borders. Barack Obama is not an exception since for him these are national interests. Nonetheless, at the time of presidential election in Ukraine won by Russia-loyal Victor Yanukovich Washington preferred to keep neutral and not interfere.
Having acquired additional levers of influence on political opponents in the region Russia generously agreed on sanctions against Teheran for the States. This brilliant tactics literally disarmed the world community. Who could have thought that Moscow would suspend relations with Teheran? According to Americans, only the Russian government can help the States improve relationships with Iran, North Korea and Kirgizia.
