Saakashvili changing name to spite Russia

2011-03-15 12:56

14605.jpegEverything flows, everything changes and nothing remains constant. It may happen that you wake up one morning to learn that the president of your country has changed name. The point is not that another person took the helm of the state after elections. Everyone knows that the name of leader of Sakartvelo is Mikhail Saakashvili. But now people will have to get used to a new fact: he is not Mikhail but Mikheil. What does this unusual name mean and why is the Georgian president displeased with the previous one?

Russophobia takes strange shapes in some heads. For instance, anti-Moscow sentiments took a fanciful form in the head of the Georgian president. He made a personal sacrifice to feel Georgia's complete detachment from Russia by changing his birth name. One is to learn now that Saakashvili's name is not Mikhail but Mikheil.

The fact that the leader of Sakartvelo will now be called differently was first announced by his website where the name of Mikhail was used in such an unusual way. Of course, they called Saakashvili "Mikheil" before but it was either a misprint, or the journalists' "showing-off", or a feeble attempt to convey the Georgian pronunciation of the name. The same happened to the site: at first, everyone thought it to be an embarrassing misprint that would be soon corrected.

However, the misprint turned out to be stubborn and quickly got from the site to the pages of the Georgian press. In several days, Mishiko became Mikheil almost officially - at least, Georgian media prefer to call him this way today.

It resembles one doubtful story about Mishiko's famous fellow countrymen Iosiph Stalin and the Pravda ("Truth") newspaper that misprinted the name of some shockworker. While seeing Stalin, he pointed at the unfortunate misprint made by the leading Soviet periodical and got the following response: "Pravda ("Truth") never publishes lies!" Poor shockworker had to change his passport in compliance with the correction made by the Soviet newspaper.
