Kobalia and her buns to save the country from hunger

2011-03-21 19:33

14883.jpegMinister of Economy and Sustained Development of Georgia Veronika Kobalia is vainly trying to get the Caucasian republic out of a debt pit. She must be often recollecting her Canadian past, her father's bakery and a while starched apron of a waitress serving doughnuts and rolls. That is why the young Vera decided to develop not only tourist business but also bread business in her country and signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Georgian State University. A gastronomy course will be opened at the food technology faculty. The young lady must be thinking that the cost of a hand-made loaf of bread is lower than that of a shop-bought, which means everyone

can save a couple of laris which is always needed.

Veronika Kobalia's story is known to each Georgian. Before the Olympic Games in Vancouver, she baked bread, cheesecakes and pies for Canadians together with her parents and sold them in their family bakery in British Columbia. But then, a lucky star shone above the dark-haired head of the future minister: during the Winter Games she met Mikhail Saakashvili who unexpectedly wished to meet the Georgian community in Canada. Here he noticed the beautiful Vera, fell in love with her and decided to settle her future. Since the then Minister of Economy Zurab Pololikashvili was unable to cope with the privatization plan, the Georgian leader easily exchanged him for a young nymph. Kobalia did not think long. She hurriedly backed here suitcase and moved to the citadel of democracy and liberal reforms so as to do economic miracles for her people's benefit.

However, it's typical of the past to reappear at the least suitable moment. The small bakery where the lady could realize her most ambitious ideas reminds Vera of her cloudless days in Canada more and more often.

"Among her ideas were environment protection measures, such as biologically decomposable packets that allowed to expand the company due to the new selling opportunities. Today, they sell these packets to dozens of shops in the United States of America. She actually doubles the company's business", - Kobalia's father is cited by a Canadian periodical The Globe and Mail.

In Georgia, Mrs. Kobalia has to play the role of a talking puppet, for the priorities have been defined a long time ago by Mikhail Saakashvili who is dreaming of Singapore, Switzerland and Estonia at once. The young minister of economy has to follow the set course and continue reforms in the tourist sector, while many of her fellow countrymen are leading a dog's life beyond poverty line.
