Subeliani’s personal tragedy and triumph2011-03-28 21:12
During yesterday's debate in parliament the National Movement saved Bakur Kvezereli, minister of agriculture, from opposition's attack. Today they voted against resignation of Koba Subeliani, minister for refugees who was too smart to omit the story of misappropriated firewood and referred to self-immolation of a refugee woman as to a personal tragedy that cannot serve as a ground for his resignation. This is the way Koba passed his trust test of the "dominant party".
Self-immolation will remain a personal tragedy of the minister who embezzled firewood of Georgian refugees. The dominant majority - 70 out of 81 - voted against Koba Subeliani's resignation. He had no doubts of this outcome. Yesterday, before the start of debates in parliament, minister for forced evictees announced he was not going to give up. Moreover, he informed journalists of sms-messages from common citizens that called the official "to maintain ground".
The parliamentary minority pretended to be extremely interested in the minister's resignation. However, if that had happened, the "tamed" opposition would have lost a very convenient target of criticism and self-promotion and would have started to stonewall the next appointee. Ministers are dependent persons, after all. They only execute orders ofsuperiors, and if they are asked to save on homes for refugees, the life of Natia Pipia, the refugee that burned herself is of no importance.
According to chair of Christian Democrat parliamentary faction Georgi Akhvlediani this terrible incident is already enough for a resignation if not for a criminal case. "The woman burned herself in front of your ministry. This is unprecedented. Driving her to suicide is a criminal offence. Name at least one reason why you want to be minister for affairs of forced evictees", - he attacked Akhvlediani.
Subeliani gave no reply about the reasons why he wants to seat in the minister's chair. And he tried to wash off his responsibility for the woman who committed suicide out of absolute hopelessness with catharsis. "Pipia's self-immolation that you advertise is a tragedy, my tragedy, first of all", - he emphasized reminding that the woman had no right to own an apartment in Tbilisi because she was registered in Zugdidi. As Subeliani asserts, she was offered an apartment there but she refused to accept it.
Akhvlediani also reminded to the minister about forced eviction of refugees from homes and their transfer to the end of the earth. "I saw all this with my own eyes. I restrained myself from hitting a policeman or a deputy minister", - the Christian democrat highlighted.
