Club of Cheerful and Inventive Jingoists2011-04-18 21:04
The incident with a clumsy joke of the Georgian KVN team "Cosa Nostra" that had a plainly jingoistic tinge has moved to a new level. Now local human rights activists demand from the country's authorities to dismiss the Minister for family, youth and sports Vladimir Vardzelashvili. In their opinion, a person supporting anti-Semitic slurs has no right to deal with the problems of the rising generation.
The scandal burst during a game conducted by the local federation of the Club of the Cheerful and Inventive (KVN). By the way, some time ago it was created with great fanfares exactly with the support of Vardzelashvili's department. In spite of the conflict with the northern neighbour, Georgia did not manage to give up organizing KVN festivals in Georgia. However, there is still an undercover ban on trips to Russia. So the local KVN guys have to stew in their own juice. And, judging by the latest events, the "dish" is not coming out too tasty.
During one of the KVN games a collective named "Cosa Nostra" representing the Tbilisi Medical University gave an extremely provoking answer to the presenter's question on "the greatest achievement of Adolf Hitler ". "Free gas in the family of every Jew" the phrase aroused extraordinary admiration of the public, and the jury did not remain indifferent either, unanimously rewarding the "humourists" with the highest vote. However, the consequences of this awkward situation turned out to be quite sadder than they usually are in the Club of the Cheerful and Inventive.
Jingoism and anti-Semitism have never been inherent in the people of Sakartvelo. Of course, somebody could remember the conflicts with Abkhazia and South Ossetia that had a frankly nationalistic ground. However, they are obviously a result of the activity of some instigators in the top echelons of power, not a manifestation of the Georgian character. And the attention was riveted on the scandalous joke for one simple reason. The problem is the ill-fated game was broadcast by one of the central Georgian channels "Imedi", and the jury featured the head of the "youth" ministry Vladimir Vardzelashvili. In this connection a civil association "Multinational Georgia" demanded apologies from the authors of the joke and the suspension of the official. The claims were laid to the jury members that asked such an ambiguous question.
