2008 in Georgia: some unofficial results2008-12-31 15:07
Georgia is summing up 2008 results - unofficially for now. That is why probably they are not very bright. And though the authorities are trying to calm the population down, most experts do not see enough grounds for that.
At the final government session on December 28 Mikheil Saakashvili stated he was optimistic about the coming year. He assured the people that the national currency rate was stable and Georgia was not facing the financial crisis.
"We are not in crisis as such for the time being. The country's undergoing deceleration of economic growth, - he is quoted by Interfax. - The government's main task is to disallow economic slowdown to become a disaster that many countries in the post-Soviet space are experiencing. The next six months will be very difficult for Georgia, as well as the second half, but by 2010 we will be able to restore macroeconomic stability in the country".
According to lnews.az portal many Georgian experts agree the Georgian authorities are up in the clouds and fail to evaluate the situation in an adequate way.
"The tragedy is that there are non-pros in our government, - politologist Ramaz Klimiashvili believes with a not tiny bit of sarcasm. - They are appointed according to their closeness to Saakashvili. This usually leads to a bad end. 2008 has been a catastrophic year for Georgia. We have never seen such a disgraceful year in our history. As for Saakashvili's statements that the financial crisis is bypassing us, this is just the case when he's lying. Georgia is a small country, and we have nothing. What financial crisis can we talk about if we are fundless?
The fact that this year has been so miserable for Georgia is supported by another politologist - Jimmi Jaliashvili. "This has been a tragic year, - he says. - I consider it the worst one. Look at the fact that we took pains to lose our own territories within seconds. I think our government sees backdated things. They want the European structures to be more active. This should have been done before the war, not now. If we had done it earlier, the military way would have been justified, but we have mixed up things. We call on Europe to restore our territorial integrity. It is out of question. May be Europe is surprised at that too".
Jaliashvili made the following comment on Saakashvili's address mentioned above: "Inadequate decisions were taken at the government session. When the country's president says that we have escaped the crisis - it is superficial. This is a global problem and even the most powerful state believes that the crisis will not be cured instantly".
