Ukraine Obscured Georgia's Eyes

2011-06-28 21:02

And he has every reason for such hopes. Immediately after announcing the appearance of its brands in the republic the British corporation managed to occupy 70% of Tbilisi's beer market and up to 40% in the nine largest regions of the country. The producers of the local popular brands, such as Natakhtari, Kastel, Batumuri and many others, will be able to resist the invasion of the Western giant only if the state conducts a coherent policy of antimonopoly regulation of the market. But it would be really naïve to expect this from Saakashvili's regime supporting the interests of the large Western, mainly Anglo-Saxon capital.

And, by the way, not for nothing Nukri Tokradze mentioned the popularity of the Zhigulyovskoe beer in the Transcaucasian republic, because now the chances that Georgian residents have to try the original drink in the foreseeable future are minimal. While the Sarmat brand is quite deservedly appreciated in the territory of the ex-USSR, the true connoisseurs of beer in Georgia are unlikely to be glad about the substitution of the Samara brewery product with the Donetsk interpretation of the legendary recipe. But, of course, the lobbyists of the Western corporations' interests in Saakashvili's administration who brought Georgia to a rupture of the traditional relations with Russia do not think so. And ordinary citizens are paying for it. Last week there were

some cases of mass intoxication with low-quality beer produced in Azerbaijan that is bottled there under a license of the Russian Baltika. Many people who consumed this slop had a severe gastrointestinal upset. A $150K-worth volume of the Azerbaijanian broth was withdrawn from Georgian shops and now, according to the Head of the Union of Free Consumers of Azerbaijan Eyub Guseinov, the issue of returning the dangerous alcohol to the manufacturer country is being solved. It would not be out of place to mention that the original products of the celebrated Russian brewery would not cause such dire consequences. But the Georgian connoisseurs of the foamy drink will not see it, as well as the Zhigulyovskoe beer from Samara. The praised liberalism of Mikhail Saakashvili covers just some selected companies included into the list prepared in Washington. And the celebrated Russian beer producers are, of course, excluded.
