Susan Schwab: USA don't intend to impede Russia’s integration to WTO

2009-01-14 11:23

The USA didn't promise Georgia to impede Russia's integration to World Trade Organization, said Susan Schwab, the United States Trade Representative, at yesterday's negotiations, ITAR TASS reports.

According to Schwab, the date of Russia's integration to WTO depends on its own actions, and in her view, it will come.

It's worthy noticing that in August 2008 Matthew Bryza, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, stated that WTO would impede process of Russia's admittance in reply of its actions in the area of conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia, Kavkazskiy Uzel reports.

At present moment, according to Schwab, there is no unofficial agreement between Washington and Tbilisi on backing of political demands of Georgian side concerning Russia's integration in WTO.

Negotiations on Russia's joining WTO were held in June in Geneva. Georgia didn't participate, and motivated it with the demand to the Russian side to disaffirm the decree of April 16th by the ex-President Vladimir Putin, concerning with establishment of direct economic relations with unrecognized republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Previously Georgia stated it would block Russia's way to WTO until the abrogation of the decisions of the latter on establishment of direct trade and economic relations with Abkhazia.
