Georgia prepares a roaring spring2009-01-16 13:24
It was reported on January 14 that in mid March at latest the Georgian opposition would come forward with an unconventionally formulated demand for President Mikheil Saakashvili's resignation. For this purpose a united oppositional front is being formed in the country.
This information was disseminated by "Kavkaz-Press" agency that published an interview with "Movement for United Georgia" Secretary General Eka Beselia. She emphasized that the united opposition was going to alter its tactics and decided to forego the protest action planned for January 25.
"At this stage we have no time for single-shot warnings, - Beselia explained. - More efficient ways of change of power in Georgia must be found".
Certain details on "efficient ways" became known to Interfax from a source in the united opposition. Presently as the source reports consultations between all opponents to the current regime are being held in order to work out a joint memorandum. This document will call on Saakashvili to resign his post as president before March 15.
That same day, on January 14, the united opposition's official statement was made public.
"We cancel all warning actions planned before, - it is quoted by Interfax, - and ask the oppositional forces to complete consultations on the start of the united protest movement as soon as possible".
It is implied that the success is possible only in case of integration of all forces disagreeing with the current authorities' policy. Only after that the protest actions should be started and they will have the right result. The following parties were going to participate in the demonstration planned for January 25 in the center of Tbilisi with a demand for Mikheil Saakashvili's resignation: "Conservatives", "People's party" and "Movement for United Georgia". It is instructive to recall that there are over a dozen of oppositional parties in Georgia. The idea of this action was announced on January 6 by Eka Beselia through GHN information agency.
As for other oppositional forces the statements of some of the leaders are quite reserved. Levan Berdzenishvili, the leader of the Republicans reported that his party's participation in similar actions was out of question.
Laborists did not display much enthusiasm either. However they could have been a good supplement to the "unit of the objectors".
"We prefer impeachment of President - we have already initiated this process and we'll follow it through", - Kommersant is quoting the words of Labor Party's Secretary General Iosif Shatberashvili.
