A pipeline leading Georgia to nowhere

2011-07-29 20:05

A pipeline leading Georgia to nowhere. 20234.jpegTbilisi is eager to obtain some pipeline but is permanently unlucky - just as in the rest of things. The widely promoted Nabucco has died without being born, AGRI's prospect is so far rather vague and the construction of White Stream was initially a fancy, for Ukraine has got no money even to improve its own gas transportation system, not to mention participating in any international project. However, the Georgian government decided that if one wants something very much, all the above mentioned problems can be

settled. The Oil and Gas Corporation of Georgia (OGCG) announced a tender for buying construction materials to build the Georgian section of the East-West gas pipeline.

The Oil and Gas Corporation of Georgia has prepared a report on influencing the environment and the social sphere of the construction of the Abasha-Senaki 29-kilometer branch that is to become part of the East-West gas pipeline and now it has announced a tender for the construction materials supply for the project. Things seem to be all right but for a single point: this gas pipeline is nothing but a fancy of those who are eager to implement it.

The irony is that the project is being realized and its chances to be completed are much higher than those of Nabucco, AGRI and White Stream's all together. The possibility that it will ever run through the territory of the Caucasian republic is almost zero. The East-West gas pipeline is called that way because it runs from the eastern regions of Turkmenistan towards the shore of the Caspian Sea. So long as Ashkhabad is building it at its own expense without involving foreign partners, whose un-cooperation has already buried Nabucco, the possibility of a successful project completion is much higher. The project completion is scheduled for 2015 but no one knows what will happen to it later, except for the Georgian government.

"The project has currently got one soft spot - this gas pipeline leads to nowhere, for there is no pipe that can carry the gas further on", - Commersant remarks. The East-West pipeline will end on the shore of the Caspian Sea and its future will depend on which of the two gas pipelines, the Caspian or Transcaspian, will be built earlier and on whether it will be built at all.
