Five August days of lies2011-09-05 13:15
Only a lazy person has not condemned Renny Harlin's latest work starring Andy Garcia - Five Days of August, a propaganda hack. The film with a USD 20 mln budget logically foundered at the box office, was torn to pieces by critics and got a low rating on IMDB portal. At the time of the round table before the premiere, the production team openly admitted that propaganda prevailed over creativity.
Renny Harlin immediately stated that historical truth was lost to political conjuncture already at the time of script writing. The Finnish director's best days when he released Die Hard and Cliffhanger are gone. So he does not mind hackwork when money is offered. His main task in this movie was to please Mikheil Saakashvili and his team, Harlin confessed.
"The script was not approved in the Cabinet of the republic - no, but the Georgian side was satisfied and offered us good support", - the film director said explicitly. - Equipment of the Georgian army was lent to us for a modest fee. Thus, we managed to make a low-budget movie - by Hollywood standards - that does not look low-budget at all". One phrase of the Finnish director describes the supertask of his work as well as violations on the part of the client ready to use the army and military equipment supported by the Georgian budget for the purpose of self-praise.
Renny Harlin has little knowledge of the events in Caucasus and is an incidental figure in the ideological war Saakashvili unleashed against the Russian Federation and people of his country. One little fact proves it most demonstratively: he was not ashamed to invite Russian stuntmen to his anti-Kremlin libel. Ok, nothing can be got out of him. But Saakashvili's lack of principle can easily be included in textbooks of dirty PR-technologies.
"I adore Russian stunt coordinators. I wanted my movie to have coolest special effects and stunts, so I invited Russian stunt men in - those who worked in Night Watch and Day Watch. When I told my Georgian producers about it they said: have a heart, less than a year has passed since the war. They did not believe that Russians would come to us across the border on a dynamite loaded truck to do all these crazy things, but I convinced them to try", - the movie maker said paying tribute to Russian cinema men. Yet, though Saakashvili gave Harlin full swing inside the republic, the film director had enough time to learn an opposite side of the nature of the smiling despot of Georgia - his paranoic spy scare imposed in Georgia in best traditions of Joseph Stalin.
