Ilia II has to come down to earth2011-10-10 13:59
Georgian Patriarch Ilia II was outraged by misinformation about the split within the Georgian Orthodox Church caused by the law on the status of religious associations. This document was adopted by parliament in record time in the summer. It has allowed almost all communities to assign legal status. Previously, only GOC enjoyed such a privilege. Both, the society and the Holy Synod of the Georgian church immediately expressed their protest to lawmakers. But those who sought the abolition of exclusive rights of GOC continued to reduce its credibility.
continued to reduce its credibility.
Whatever Georgian Patriarch says in his preach - his words are immidiately quoted by the Georgian media, the people regurgitate them to each other in the streets, state institutions are quoting him. Ilia II is unquestioned authority, more precisely, he was such.
Over the last couple of years after 2008 war, the image of Georgian Patriarch has slightly faded due to tireless work of the destroyers of Georgian traditions. Representatives of so-called "Liberty Institute" - a social organization whose members passed their universities in the West - are against him. After returning, they brought in Georgia not only the "Rose Revolution" but also "cultural revolution" aiming to inculcate liberal values in Georgians. The Orthodox faith, preserved in the country despite 70 years of Soviet power, was a significant hindrance to the re-education of Georgians and weaning them from Russia. So, Ilia II has to come down from the heavens.
In the videos on the web sites Patriarch was shown as a libertine. His congregation was provoked into fights with blasphemers-writers, and then was declared crazy sect. The journalists hunted out his Moscow past and called him the agent of Kremlin. But probably the GOC and its head got the most crushing blow this year. The Georgian Parliament passed and the President signed amendments to the Civil Code which allow all religious communities to get status of legal entities.
Previously, only Georgian Orthodox Church had this advantage. This special provision is contained in a special agreement with the government - the Concordat, and it is reflected in the Constitution. While only GOC has remained a legal entity, only it was entitled to obtain the real estate. Now Armenian Apostolic Church, Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist and other faiths have got such opportunity.
