An agricultural kept woman2011-11-01 15:13
Agriculture of Georgia - is a headache which Mikhail Saakashvili's government is shifting to foreign partners, not even hiding its impudence. Finance Minister Dmitry Gvindadze asked the opposition not to worry about cuts in funding of the agricultural sector, because the budget - is a mere drop in a sea of investment, flowing to the country from the U.S. and the EU. But noone can see the outcome. Why so?
Georgians are often offended when their country is called the West's kept woman. But the Finance Minister Dmitry Gvindadze admitted that there are entire industries, the funding of which almost entirely depends on external sources. Thus, for Georgia's agriculture, the budget of which in the next year would wipe out 10 million lari, this loss does not play a big role. After all, the state will spend only 70 million lari on the agricultural sector, and the foreign invest - more than $ 200 million, that is over 300 million GEL.
Therefore Gvindadze asked opposition faction "Unity for Justice" not to worry about budget cuts in agriculture, which was declared one of the priorities for Georgia at the beginning of this year. The prosperity of the village - it is not just an economic issue, it is a guarantee of social stability for Saakashvili's government.
More than half of Georgian population are rural residents. However, they usually have no other source of income than a garden or a farm. They are experiencing difficulties both with the cultivation of crops and animals, and marketing. The lack of irrigation, expensive feed and fertilizer, lack of acceptance points of milk, vegetables and fruits, closed Russian market - authorities just do not solve these and other problems or solves it very inefficiently. Therefore, the rural population is sinking deeper into poverty, and young people migrate to cities and emigrate abroad.
Although the people in the villages are too slow to start, they are potential supporters of the opposition. And Saakashvili is afraid of their numerical superiority. Experts consider this fear as the explanation of sudden decision by the Government to increase funding for the agricultural sector for 150 million GEL this year. And the officials at first even did not know what a hole they can plug with this money.
40 million was allocated for a program to implement the U.S. hybrid corn. Half of farmers had got bad crop of these cereals.
