Three-clause declaration is signed. What’s next?

Georgian opposition has signed the Declaration agreeing with the public members on the main demand to the authorities: resignation of Mikheil Saakashvili, early presidential and parliamentary elections and creation of conditions for fair and free elections.

"Over five years Mikheil Saakashvili and his team have brought the country to catastrophe by their illegal actions based on violence in power. According to our common opinion each day of this team staying in power guarantees new problems for the Georgian state and citizens of Georgia. In this situation the patriotic duty of each Georgian citizen is to use best efforts to change the power in the country in a constitutional way and as soon as possible", - the document states.

The authors believe that urgent and decisive measures are necessary in this situation in order to ensure free and democratic development of the country, its unification and creation of a sound political system.

What kind of measures are meant and what steps will be taken by the opposition to achieve the three main goals is not specified in the Declaration. Oppositional leaders make no specific statements of their actions.

The society was informed that the opposition demanded Saakashvili's resignation and early elections on certain conditions - and that's it for now...

The Declaration was signed by representatives of 17 parties: "New Rights", "Democratic Movement - United Georgia" (created and chaired by ex Speaker Nino Burdzhanadze), the Conservative Party, Movement "For United Georgia" (with ex Defense minister Irakli Okruashvili as the leader), "Industry will save Georgia", the Green party, the Republican Party, "The Way of Georgia", "The Union of Traditionalists", "Women's Party", "People's Party", "Freedom" and some others, as well as a famous oppositionist, ex presidential candidate Levan Gachechiladze, businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili's sisters and 8 NGOs including "Georgian Academy" founded by leading scientific, art and culture people.

Georgia's ex Ambassador to the UN Irakli Alasania expressed his sympathy with the document but did not sign it promising to do that on completion of consultations with all oppositional forces.

According to the leaders of opposition they get united around one major objective: the country needs Saakadhvili's urgent resignation though it is not specified when it will be achieved, we repeat.

There are general statements that the regime adversaries will now act in a decisive and uncompromised manner making use of all legal methods of struggle including protest actions, declaration of impeachment etc.
